The Essentials Sophomore course is geared for students who have struggled in the past with a traditional English course. This course will provide additional structure and a slower pace to allow the bulk of the coursework to be completed within the class period. The curriculum will consist of four strands: literature, writing, vocabulary, and grammar (usage and mechanics). The literature strand will consist of selected novels in Semester 1 and poetry and drama in Semester 2. The writing strand will include a variety of analytical, expository, and creative assignments. The vocabulary development strand is derived from literature texts. The grammar strand emphasizes usage and mechanics.
Expectations: Students are expected to:
contribute actively and positively in class without causing behavioral disruptions,
work individually and in a group setting in a constructive manner, maximizing class time to complete required work,
maintain a well-organized three-ring binder that contains all class work, essays, vocabulary, and completed assignments,
maintain good attendance and complete make-up work immediately.
Students not meeting these expectations will be reassigned to a different classroom placement.
EVALUATION: 50% Process grades (Informal work through which student is developing knowledge. Think worksheets, reading quizzes, vocabulary work, rough drafts, short overnight writing assignments as well as active participation: thoughtful contribution toward discussion as well as lack of distraction away from class atmosphere.) 50% Final assessments (Formal work that ends unit study. Think tests, essays, final draft of creative stories, projects. Out-of-class work should reflect editing and revision.)
I am available in Room 223 before school on White days, after school, and during my studyhall (White 2) and prep periods (Red 2, White 4) to meet with students or parents for extra help or special concerns. I prefer email contacts, and typically reply within the day: Jamie_Gillette@fivetowns.net
You can also call me outside of classroom hours: 236-7800 ext. 223
